From October 2009 all new trucks registered in the UK must be equipped with engines
which have exhaust limits to the new Euro 5 legislation. Whilst Particulate Matter
(PM) limits remain the same as for Euro 4 (0.03 g/kWh), Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) limits
are reduced by some 43% - from 3.5 to 2.0 g/kWh.
MAN’s Euro 5 engine line-up has, arguably, the most comprehensive power range available
in the truck industry today - with power ratings from 150 PS up to 680 PS.
Most MAN engines can be specified
as EEV compliant (Enhanced Environmentally-Friendly Vehicle), which are usually
specified for inner city and municipal type applications. EEV engines have the same
NOX limits as Euro 5; however, PM limits are reduced by a further 33%
(to 0.02 g/kWh).
When it comes to emissions reduction, MAN has been a pioneer - in both Exhaust Gas
Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technologies. For a
number of years now MAN has designed, manufactured and operated both systems successfully
for use on Europe’s roads. MAN’s successful utilisation of both technologies in
their latest Euro 5 and EEV engines means that the company is ideally placed for
the introduction of Euro 6 in 2014.
